Mario Munkara is a well known artist from Bathurst Island. His sculptures are highly sought after. The elegance of this stork makes it easy to understand why.
Tiwi bird carvings are hand made from ironwood and decorated with natural earth pigments. Referred to as Tokampini. They are present throughout the major creation story of the Tiwi people. Tokampini were mortal beings who acted as witnesses, messengers, mourners, informers, and lawmakers.
Each beautiful bird is unique with their own character and reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Tiwi Islands.
