Bird
This vibrant sculpture by Tiwi artist Albertus Tipiloura captures the essence of Tiwi culture through the bold form of a native bird, carved from locally sourced ironwood. The figure stands with striking presence, its clean, sculptural silhouette offset by vivid ochre markings—rich in yellow, red, white, and black—painted in traditional Jilamara designs.
Tipiloura’s work blends a deep respect for Tiwi cultural heritage with a contemporary artistic eye. The cross-hatching and geometric bands reflect ceremonial body paint used during Pukumani (mourning) rituals, while the bird itself symbolises the close relationship between Tiwi people and their natural environment.
Crafted by hand using traditional tools and natural pigments, each piece is entirely unique. Tipiloura is part of a new generation of Tiwi artists continuing the legacy of ironwood carving with energy, craftsmanship, and cultural pride.
